Ruby’s father, Otto, whom she has never met, also had this magical blood. It’s Ruby’s blood, added to the water, that makes this happen (it also heals wounds and makes plants grow like mad (this is, of course, not ludicrous at all)). After 200 years, Ruby is only about 16 physically.Įxcept, of course water from plants doesn’t have this mystical power (I mean, c’mon, that would be silly). the reason they’re collecting the water is that it has magical properties that keeps them from aging at a normal pace.
If there is anything worse than doing this kind of laborious, boring work, it’s doing it for 200 years. They spend all day, every day collecting water from plants. Ruby and her mother live with a small congregation of people in a community in some unspecified forest-y area in, I assume, the eastern United States. This book is one of those ones where I have no idea if I’m giving away spoilers or not. I have a hard time writing about books when I can’t fully grasp what is supposed to be a revelation in the book and what is just giving a brief overview.
Drought surprised me at every turn – it wasn’t at all what I’d expected. John O.8 of 10: Ruby and her mother belong to a congregation that is under the thumb of a cruel overseer, collecting water with magical properties, while they wait for Ruby’s father to come rescue them. This novel sparkles! Kids who like dystopian fiction or a strong male protagonist are sure to like this one. His one faltering step, a girl named Nia, is threatening to topple Oscar's enterprise. Oscar is building quite a bank account-the kids pay him to help them escape Candor. When there is a run-away, he is never found. He never lets on that he helps kids escape town. He learns to listen to his own Oscar-made messages that override Candor's messages. If you decide not to listen to the tapes, or cd's or music, you start to go through a form of withdrawal: migraine headaches and even suicide attempts can follow. Oscar's father has actually invented a new addiction: aural addiction, the addiction to listening. You want to lose weight? Quit smoking? Get rid of all your bad habits? Just put your name on the waiting list for a house in Candor. Even the parents are fed subliminal messages to control behaviors. He sells homes to people who wish to create their perfect lives with their perfect children. Oscar Bank's father created Candor, a "perfect" town in Florida. The messages control your mind, all your thoughts are not your own. Broadcast day and night, even when you are sleeping.
